TL;DR: Counter-strafing in CS2 is not only about stopping your movement faster so you can shoot accurately. It can also become part of your aiming. By using movement to bring your crosshair onto an opponent and counter-strafing just before firing, you can make precise shots easier. Prefire Mode and Holdout Mode are both useful ways to practice this skill.
Counter-strafing in CS2 is one of the best core skills to understand and control.
Easily explained, when you run in one direction and then wish to stop, instead of just letting the speed settle by itself, you will instead counter with the opposite movement key to stop faster. This will eliminate the velocity, which makes you shoot more accurately.
But there is more to this. It's not only about the fact that it helps you set your velocity to zero as soon as possible. It is actually a different way of aiming.
It looks so easy when the pros hit headshots, why?
This is the thing: not only do the pros understand how to counter-strafe perfectly, but they also include it as a part of their aim.
You might see a pro player hit three Deagle headshots as if it were nothing, and it's not that the pros manage to do insane flicks to achieve it. No, it is because when the pros have good crosshair placement and they have an enemy in front of them, instead of trying to micro-aim with the mouse right on the opponent's head, they let their movement bring the crosshair to the opponent's head. Once they are ready to fire, they do the counter-strafe and shoot.
The reason is, it is so much easier to micro-aim with the help of movement than it is to micro-aim with the mouse, and counter-strafing is the most vital piece here.
How do I improve my Counter-Strafing, then?
There are two game modes we highly recommend for this.
Prefire Mode
In Prefire Mode, the player is supposed to walk through a specified route while shooting stationary bots along the way. Once a bot is spotted, then it is a perfect moment to try a counter-strafe kill. The chat will also let you know if you hit the counter-strafe or not, based on velocity.
Video example of Prefire Mode:
Holdout Mode
In this mode, bots will peek you from several different angles while you stand still in a small area with a bit of cover. The great thing about this mode is that it allows you to practice counter-strafing on moving bots, but also that it is pretty much impossible not to practice your counter-strafing while playing it, as if you stand fully still, the bots will eliminate you quickly. Being light on your feet will be the deciding factor in whether or not you beat the level.

FAQ
Q: What is counter-strafing in CS2?
A: Counter-strafing is the technique of pressing the opposite movement key to stop your movement faster. This reduces your velocity and allows you to shoot more accurately.
Q: Why is counter-strafing important in CS2?
A: Counter-strafing helps you become accurate more quickly after moving. It can also be used as part of your aim by letting your movement bring your crosshair onto an opponent before you stop and shoot.
Q: Can counter-strafing improve my aim?
A: Yes. Instead of relying only on small mouse adjustments, you can use movement to bring your crosshair onto an opponent's head. Counter-strafing then allows you to stop and fire accurately at the right moment.
Q: Why do pro players make headshots look so easy?
A: Pro players combine good crosshair placement, movement, and counter-strafing. Rather than making large or difficult flicks, they often use movement to line up the crosshair and then counter-strafe before firing.
Q: What is Prefire Mode?
A: Prefire Mode is a training mode where you move through a specified route and eliminate stationary bots. It gives you repeated opportunities to practice stopping with a counter-strafe before shooting.
Q: How does Prefire Mode help with counter-strafing?
A: Each time you encounter a bot, you can practice stopping your movement and firing accurately. The mode can also indicate whether your counter-strafe was successful based on your velocity.
Q: What is Holdout Mode?
A: Holdout Mode places you in a small area while bots peek from different angles. You need to keep moving to survive, which makes it useful for practicing counter-strafing against moving targets.
Q: Which mode is better for practicing counter-strafing?
A: Both are useful in different ways. Prefire Mode is good for repeatedly practicing controlled counter-strafe kills, while Holdout Mode forces you to use movement and counter-strafing continuously against bots that actively peek you.
Q: Where can I practice counter-strafing in these modes?
A: Both Prefire Mode and Holdout Mode are available at https://scl.gg.
